Jaipur vs Udaipur 2026: Which Rajasthan City Should You Visit?

Every Rajasthan itinerary eventually runs into the same question: Jaipur or Udaipur? One is the loud, pink, fort-and-bazaar capital. The other is a softer city of lakes, palaces and rooftop sunsets. They are very different places, and the right choice depends on the kind of trip you want. Here is how they compare, and how to see both without a rushed schedule.
The Short Answer
Choose Jaipur if...
- • It is your first trip and you are doing the Golden Triangle
- • You love forts, palaces and busy bazaars
- • You want the most sights in the least time
- • You are shopping for textiles, jewellery or pottery
Choose Udaipur if...
- • You want a slower, more romantic pace
- • You like water, sunsets and old-town lanes
- • You are travelling as a couple or on a honeymoon
- • You have already seen Rajasthan's big forts
With six days or more, you do not have to choose. Jaipur and Udaipur complement each other well.
Jaipur: The Pink City

Jaipur is Rajasthan's capital and its busiest city, and it is the third corner of the Golden Triangle. The old city is known for its pink sandstone buildings, and the sights come one after another:
- Amber (Amer) Fort: A hilltop fort above a lake, with the Sheesh Mahal (Hall of Mirrors).
- City Palace: Part museum, part royal residence, with Rajput and Mughal art.
- Hawa Mahal: The five-storey Palace of Winds, best photographed in the morning light.
- Jantar Mantar: An 18th-century observatory with huge stone instruments.
- Nahargarh Fort and Jal Mahal: A city viewpoint and a palace seemingly floating on Man Sagar Lake.
- Bazaars: Block-print textiles, jewellery, blue pottery and mojari shoes.
Udaipur: The City of Lakes
Founded in 1559 by Maharana Udai Singh II, Udaipur is built around Lake Pichola and its neighbours. Palaces rise straight from the water, and evenings are spent on rooftops and ghats watching the light change. It is quieter and easier to walk than Jaipur.
- City Palace: A huge palace complex on the lake shore with museums, courtyards and views.
- Lake Pichola boat ride: Best in the late afternoon, passing the Lake Palace and Jag Mandir.
- Jagdish Temple: A busy 17th-century temple in the heart of the old town.
- Saheliyon ki Bari: A garden of fountains and pavilions built for royal women.
- Monsoon Palace: A hilltop palace with sweeping views, popular at sunset.
- Old town: Small shops, miniature paintings and rooftop cafes.

Getting from Jaipur to Udaipur
It is roughly 400 km, about 6 hours plus stops by road. A private car is the most flexible option because it lets you break up the journey. Two popular stops:
- Pushkar: A small holy town around a sacred lake, with a relaxed, market-street feel.
- Chittorgarh Fort: A vast hilltop fort and one of Rajasthan's most historic sites.
Flights and trains also link the two cities. Check current schedules when you plan.
